Description
This is a polished lapis lazuli tab showing deep royal-blue areas interrupted by greyish mottling and scattered fine metallic-looking sparkles. The piece has a blocky, mostly rectangular form with flat faces and slightly rounded edges and is opaque in appearance. The tab measures 4 × 4 × 1.5 cm and weighs 67 g. Its surfaces are smoothly polished, and the metallic-looking sparkles are visible against the blue ground across the face. Photographs include fingers for scale. Lapis lazuli is a multi-mineral rock commonly dominated by lazurite with accessory minerals that can produce pale veins, grey patches and small metallic reflections; Sar-e-sang in Afghanistan is a well-known source for lapis material.
