Description
This is a polished lapis lazuli rectangular cabochon showing a rich deep-blue ground interrupted by cloudy white veins and bands, scattered dark specks and small metallic-looking flecks. The surface is glossy from polishing, with slight edge wear visible in places. The piece measures 5 × 3 × 3 cm and weighs 96 g. The form is a smoothed rectangle with rounded edges; the polish emphasises the stone’s blue body and the contrast between the white veining and darker inclusions. Lapis lazuli is a rock dominated by the blue mineral lazurite and commonly contains calcite (white) and minor sulphides (metallic tones). Sar-e-sang, Afghanistan, is a recognised source for lapis material and is given here as the specimen’s locality.
