Description
This is a polished rectangular block of lapis lazuli showing vivid royal-blue areas set against dark grey–black mottling and scattered small pale specks across its slightly rough, polished flat faces. The piece is opaque and retains a blocky, hand-sized rectangular form. The specimen measures 3.5 × 2.7 × 2.3 cm and weighs 63 g. Faces are polished but not highly reflective, with a slightly textured polish that preserves the rock’s mottling and tiny pale inclusions. is noted on the blocky edges and faces. Lapis lazuli is a rock dominated by the blue mineral lazurite and commonly contains pale calcite and darker accessory minerals; Sar-e-sang in Afghanistan is a recognised source of lapis used in lapidary and ornamental pieces.
