Description
This specimen is a rounded drusy amethyst dome sitting on a dark rock matrix. The surface is covered in many small sparkling purple crystal points that create a domed outline; tones range from light to darker purple and several crystals show translucent interiors and reflective faces. A natural cavity or opening is visible on the right side and one side appears cut, exposing the host rock and the flower-like drusy formation. The piece measures 11 × 6 × 5 cm and weighs 546 g. The matrix is dark and contrasts with the purple druse, and the cut side reveals the contact between the crystal layer and its host. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz (SiO2), and quartz commonly forms crystal surfaces like this in cavities and seams.
