Description
This Wenshan calcite cluster is dominated by a single tall, slender translucent prismatic crystal that rises above numerous smaller white-to-translucent radiating bladed and spiky crystal aggregates. Surfaces are irregular and catch the light, and the specimen is shown on a clear glass display base. The piece measures 7 × 5 × 4 cm and weighs 48 g. Colour ranges from pale cream to honey on the larger prism, with the surrounding aggregates appearing whiter to translucent; crystal surfaces have a sparkly, uneven texture rather than smooth polish. Calcite is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and is common in a wide variety of sedimentary, metamorphic and hydrothermal settings; Wenshan, China is a recognised locality for calcite specimens with a range of habits and colours.
